Broilers, Broilers and more Broilers!

This year we added a new item to our homestead sales: broilers! Don’t know what a broiler is? A Broiler is a chicken that has been bred specifically for meat. There are a few different varieties, but we like the Cornish cross. It provides the most meat with the shortest growth season!

Here at Yellowknife Homestead, we have raised broilers for about 17 years. Our kids introduced them to our family when they got involved with our local fair and 4H.

Raising broilers is not hard, but you do need space. We offer our broilers a secure area to live where they have access to fresh grass twice a day and we supplement their grass with a high quality feed. You can now find our broilers in their own special space called a chicken tractor. These are made specifically to be moved regularly (we move ours twice a day) so that the broiler has access to fresh grass.

In January, we took pre-orders for this seasons broiler sales! We were tickled pink with the number of responses that we ended up with! It was the perfect amount of sales for our just new business.

But as the spring as progressed, we had more people reaching out to us asking us if we had whole chickens for them to purchase! Fortunately, we were able to get some extra broilers to raise!

This has also lead to unexpected infrastructure builds and expenses, but God has been gracious and so far we have managed to stay on track with our budget. Pretty much everything we’ve made so far has been reinvested into the business. Allowing us to stay debt free. Which is major when starting a small business.

If you would like to purchase a chicken, please contact us. We have a few slots still available on upcoming dates. Broilers are sold whole, minimum order of 5, $5/broiler down payment (Venmo FF or cashapp), broilers are $4.29/pound and are 5 to 6 pounds in size.
